Clicking picture of young lads are difficult and have to be approached with tact and grace. Start a conversation on the topic they like by asking them or knowing from them. If they feel free with you, they will be open towards you and this will help you communicate with them easily. Shouting with them or using slang against them will tend to lose of communication and flexibility. This is my approach to everything in my life “Less of me and more of you”. Work quickly and effectively with a little preparation.
Teenagers want to be treated like adults and if one talks with them giving respect they feel free with them and cooperate with them. This makes photo session easy. You will want to share topics or take ideas from them, these will develop mutual respect and you can ask the young adults for any pose. With teenager, effective communication is a key to work with them. Once they start to trust you, they will be wanting more and more to be photographed and might even give suggestions. You will find the best images come with patience.
Make them busy in activities such as, using electronic devices, drawing scenarios, playing chess. If they stay busy with some object they will be focused on that and give you a proper candid pose. If they are on the beach or play ground, they should be engaged playing basketball, football or Frisbee. This will have the photographer take natural looking candid’s. The relaxed they will stay with the environment, the better energy and expression they will provide.
Photographing outside with the natural light is the best way for clicking images. Teenagers are usually flawless and complexities of the world, so you are better shooting them in simple settings. Avoiding flash for shooting is better. They will become more comfortable and self aware if you just keep snapping pictures. Natural behavior and action makes the teenagers interesting subjects. They should bring other outfits to wear, as it is important to have clothing options. In addition, if the background is fairly neutral and the contrast with the dress is perfect the picture will be of different level, which the young adults like the most.
You might be tempted to just snap the basic head shots when you have a teenager that isn’t super easy to photograph, just to get over it. Teenagers love to be with their friends and want to enjoy.
